It's the time of year where you can see spring emerge as the hibernating wildlife stirs and comes alive once more. The need to pull over to the side of the road overwhelms you and you must get out of your car. I am sure this is a very familiar experience to you no matter where you live, especially if you are an artist. This moment in time can inspire you to create many gorgeous art pieces. What better way to do that, then to sit silently amongst all the beauty surrounding you and sketch? It’s effortless, fast and the inspiration you feel can produce some beautiful floral portraits that may later turn into fine art giclées.
Stunning wild flowers and their many shapes and brilliant colors are not the only sleeping beauties that have come to life. As you sit and sketch, you may also see their playmates with their tiny wings that flutter and buzz. Sketching is so wonderfully relaxing, no need to worry about creating a masterpiece; instead, your focus is just on many quick and fleeting moments captured by dozens of tiny little drawings. Maybe as you sketch your snapshots of floral portraits you wonder, "What on earth am I going to do with all these?" Well, I have an idea for you…
As the evening approaches and the shadows lengthen on the flowers and it becomes time for you to go home, don't let the process stop there. Flip through your multitudes of floral and butterfly sketches and look for potential pieces to continue work on. Finding your favorites will not be easy, but try to get it down to your top three picks that need a stage all to themselves. Don't ignore the rest though, they can sit together to compliment one another. If you choose, you may decide to add color to your lovely spring bouquet, and bring that quick little sketch a new life.
Once your sketches are picked out and filled with color if you chose to do so, the next step is to have them transferred onto your computer so you may work with them just a little more. You may scan them or use a digital camera to take some photos of the art, either will work. If you are comfortable with Photoshop, try a few experiments with touching up the sketches. You could also turn groups of sketches into a wonderful collage and play with the size and shape of your top favorites. You can pop the color or use any of the many fun filters for that extra little tweak. If you don’t have Photoshop or the inclination to use it for this purpose just ask anyone at Canvas Press and let them help make some of these ideas and visions possible for your sketches. Make sure that no matter how you edit your photos on the computer you save them at the highest resolution possible because now you are going to turn your fabulous spring flowers into larger than life giclées.
